What is the GED test like?

The GED consists of four subjects:

  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Reasoning Through Language Arts
  • Science
  • Social Studies

How is the GED test given?

As of January 2014, all GED testing is computer based (you must go to a designated testing site to take the computer-based test).

You will need the following computer skills:

  • Mouse skills (click, double-click, drag-and-drop)
  • Keyboard and typing skills to type answers
  • Copy and paste
  • Use a scroll bar
  • Undo/redo edits
  • Use an online calculator

If you need brush up on your computer skills, there are many tutorials available online, including:
  • Free online GED practice tests for each subject
  • Online calculator tutorials available in English and Spanish.

How much does the GED test cost?

You can expect to pay around $120-$150 for the GED test.

How can I prepare for the GED test?

Study on your own:

  • Books: Search the library catalog for study books (we also have books available for purchase at the service desk).
  • Online: Use our Testing and Education Reference Center Database or Learning Express Library, both of which offer online practice tests and online books (requires Mesa Public Library card and PIN to access). The GED Testing Service site also offers free online GED practice tests for each subject
  • Computer tutorials: the computer tutorials listed above will help you prepare for the computer-based GED test.
